Could the New Year Ring in with New Counterfeits?

December 23, 2008 – 3:57 pm

CFC-propelled albuterol inhalers won’t be available after December 31. So after I ring in the New Year, I may just hop on the Internet to see whether they are still for sale.

For research purposes only! I would NEVER buy them illegally, of course, despite the challenges of using HFA albuterol. (And no one should ever obtain any prescription drug from an Internet site that is not licensed by a state board in the United States.) But after reading some recent advice from FDA about whether it is safe to obtain inhalers over the Internet, I got to thinking—the next new wave in counterfeiting may just be the CFC-propelled inhaler. Patients still want them, yet they will be unavailable through legitimate pharmacies.

There most likely will be some leftover stock of these soon-to-be-illegal inhalers. After all, I have still been able to get them with no delay, whereas my prescription for HFA albuterol had to be rewritten for CFC-propelled albuterol because my pharmacy was repeatedly out of stock of HFA.

I will make the transition, of course. Ridding the planet of CFCs seems to be the right thing to do—and I still have to breathe.

But today, if someone really wanted to stock up on the CFC-propelled inhalers, he or she could get six from a friendly “Canadian-based” Internet pharmacy—plus four free Viagra pills! (See below, posted below with typos.) What a New Year it could be!

  2. It’s January 2, 2009, and CFC-propelled albuterol is now banned for sale in the United States. And yet an Internet search yielded several sites that seemed eager to solicit U.S.-based asthmatics. One site even explained that if the inhalers were held up in customs, they would send a second shipment at no charge.
